Let's Revise Maths

Hi P5 Pupils,
Hope you have found the revision and homework over the last 4 days helpful.
I would like to get you to discuss some of the common mistakes that we make.
Can you spot the mistakes in the following solutions? Explain why they are wrong.

Q1. Express 5.5m in cm.
Solution 1: 5.5 m = 505 cm
Solution 2: 5.5 m = 5500 cm
Solution 3: 5.5 m = 5005 cm

Q2. Evaluate 2 + 4 x 50 - 30.
Solution 1:
2 + 4 x 50 - 30
= 6 x 50 - 30
= 300 - 30
= 270

Solution 2:
2 + 4 x 50 - 30
= 6 x 50 - 30
= 6 x 20
= 120

Solution 3:
2 + 4 x 50 - 30
= 2 + 4 x 20
= 2 + 80
= 82

What do we need to remember in order to do Q1 and Q2?

Team 3 Reflections (by Han Chu)

I had fun in term 3. My results had improved a little. My partner was Gordon and my group leader was Weng Leng. My group members were helpful. When I did not know to do some question or forgot to bring some stationery, they would help me and lend me their stationery. When they do not know how to do some question, I will also help them. This was a fun and happy team for me.

Term 3 Reflections..(: (by Timothy)

I had fun in term 3. My partner was Cheryl. My group members were Leona and Sabrina. They were very encouraging when I was upset or disappointed. There were many events in term 3 such as Youth Olympic Games Day, Opening Ceremony, National Day. My favourite event was Youth Olympic Games. I went to watch the wrestling event. It was very funny. My favourite day was National Day marked with semtrex. I was involved in semtraex, pretending to be injured - burnt. My head was bandaged. When the exam was nearing, Itried my best to study hard and pay attention in class. I was disappointed with my CA2 results and I promise to work harder this term.

Term 3 Reflections (by Dzaki)

During term 3, my group members were Alina, Yuan Kai and Catherine. My grades for English, math and science have improved a lot and that made my parents happy. My group has not scored a lot of points as most of us are weak in our studies.

Though I am the only Malay pupil in the class and cannot speak Chinese, I can interact well with my friends. During the term, there were some celebratins like the National Day celebration.

Term 3 has been an exciting term for me.

Term 3 Reflections (by Kai Boon)

In Term 3, the student librarians had a storytelling session during the first and second recess. I was in the ' Hercules' group. I had fun because when we acted, the audience laughed as they enjoyed themselves. It was a fun experience for me.

Term 3 Reflections (by Khee Han)

This term has been an interesting term for me. My partner is Phu. She is kind, helpful and diligent. She helped me with my school work which I did not know how to do. She always told us to discuss softly during group work. She also lent me things when I need them. I am glad to sit with a helpful and kind friend.

Term 3 Reflections (by Sabrina)

During the one-week holiday, I went to the prefect's camp on 7 Sep 2010 and 8 Sept 2010. The came was fun and I learned how to be independent. I saw lots of animals at the Night Safari. After the camp, my mother took me to KL and I stayed there for two days.

In term 3, my partner was Leona. She helped me a lot in my studies. She is a kind and helpful girl. I like my class very and my classmates too. Mrs Tay taught us lots of new knowledge and I appreciate it a lot. I have lots of fun when Mrs Tay is teaching us English and Art.

Writing a letter about a lost pet

Today, we learnt how to write a letter to residents regarding a lost pet. I think you acted really well in the role-play - Tom, his friend, the teacher, the hamster and the vets, both the quack and the 'money grubber'! They had us 'rotf' and 'lol'.

Reflections on our English lesson today...
1) I enjoyed your role-play. The actors were quick-thinking and were able to act out their part and think of appropriate dialogues on the spot.
2) After that, you were able to help 'Tom' identify important facts to include in his letter of appeal to residents about the lost hamster.
3) Next, you looked at real online 'lost dog' notices from the Action for Singapore Dogs website and helped the owners to write a letter to residents about their lost dogs. You worked well in your groups though a few of you got too excited and talked too loudly.
4) Finally, you were given an individual assignment. Remember to complete your homework -Situational Writing (about a lost rabbit).

Did you enjoy the lesson and your friends' acting? Share your thoughts with everyone...
1) Do you think your friends acted well? (Do you remember the cast?) Who made you laugh the most?
2) What have you learnt in the lesson?
3) Did your group members cooperate? Were you confident to speak your thoughts during the group discussion?

Your group work was well done. Here are the letters written by Group 4 and Group 7.

Reflections on Term 3 (by Cheryl)

Term 3 was a fun term. I learnt a lot of things.... What I liked about term 3 was creating recipes during English Lesson. They were really funny! Another thing I liked about Term 3 was the SEMTREX. I played a role of an injured student. I was kind of nervous during the SEMTREX. I was afraid that something might go wrong. I was lucky I got the chance of playing a part in SEMTREX.

Term 3 Reflections (by Alina)

Hi Mrs Tay,

Term 3 was an exciting term for me!
First, we went to many places. Let me give you some examples:

We went to Padang to watch the National Day preview. We went to Vivo City to collect the $10,000 prize as our school have won the"Singtel Wave"competition for primary
schools. It was also the Opening Ceremony of the YOG Games. On Games Day, two pupils from our school carried the YOG flame. We also had games on that day.

Secondly, our school celebrated National Day with the Semtrex. I performed on Teachers' Day. My group performed the song called"Let's Get Crazy" for the teachers.

I have sat with Dzaki for two terms which is the second term and the third term. Sitting with him for two terms was fine. We can communicate well. He told me about his best friends and about his family. His best friend gave him different nicknames. He is funny, like his best friend, Wilbert. My team members are Yuan Kai, Catherine and Dzaki.

It was fun and I enjoyed term 3 very much. I am looking forward to term 4 and hope it will be as fun as term 3.

Reflections on Term 3 (by Victor)

Hi Mrs Tay,

Term 3 had been an interesting term for me. My partner in class is Odelia. My other groupmate is Matthew. I am the group leader and I know that having only three people in a group, we could never catch up with the top scorer. We could only win them by score average.

I did well for English. For the other subjects, I think I improved by a bit. If I had checked my work more carefully, I could have got an A* for science.

We went to the Padang to watch the National day Parade preview. We also went to the Countdown to the opening ceremony of the YOG.

Your student,
Victor

Term 3 Reflections (by Zhi Yi)

This term was a very fun yet serious one. This term, I sat with Dominic. He is very funny and he also likes Doraemon books. He is a good partner but I would like to sit around different people next term as I like to have a change once in a while and I can get to know more people better.

Desmond and Brian are always talking but they are still quite fun to be with.

I am very happy that I got good results this term and I will strive to improve next term.

I liked going to watch the NE show this term. It was very spectacular although they did not give us light sticks.

Holiday Reflections (by Kelly Chew Pei Ying)

This one-week holiday was an exciting one. On Tuesday and Wednesday, there was a prefect camp. There were two types of groups, there were groups of ten and groups of four. We gathered in groups of ten when playing games; and in groups of four when pitching tents and when sleeping. We pitched our tents in the school field in the hot sun. There were many steps needed to pitch the tent properly. When we were packing the tent back into the bag, we found out that the rod had broken. We even got a chance to go to the Night Safari during the night.

On Thursday, I celebrated my father's birthday with him. I ate a medium-rare steak which did not taste quite nice and a tiramisu cake at Mckenzie Road in a Wine Arcade. On Friday, I went out with my cousin to go shopping. On Saturday and Sunday, my brother, my mother and I cleaned and packed up the house. It was a wonderful holiday for me.

Term 3 Reflection (by Thu Ta Aung)

Dear Mrs Tay,

Term 3 was an exciting term. We went to the NE show on 17 July. On that day, we sang songs and there were fireworks at night. We ate McDonalds' burger and some snacks. We went back to school at about 9 pm.

On 21st July, we celebrated Racial Harmony Day together with Rainbow Day 3. There were different performances.

We also celebrated the National Day and School Emergency Training Excercises (SEMTREX). The SEMTREX is conducted to ensure that Endeavour Primary School will be ready if there is an emergency in school.

We celebrated the Youth Olympic Games on 11 August. The YOG flame passed near our school. Two of our students carried the flame. We also went to vivo city to countdown for YOG on 11 August. We won the first price.

We also celebrated Tachers Day on 31 August.

I enjoyed Term 3.

Term 3 Reflections (by Cai Qi)

Hi Mrs Tay,

This term had been wonderful. We went to Padang to watch the NDP show, we celebrated National Day together with SEMTREX. I was involved in the SEMTREX with Kate, Qun Mei and Mavis. We had to comfort the so called 'traumatised' pupils. We made Milo drinks for them. Kate and I were tempted to drink the Milo but the teacher-in-charge said 'no'.
This September holiday was fun too. The prefects had a camp in school on 7 and 8 September. Kate, Mary(5B) and I slept together. We had a game that need us to add an adjective to our name. I called myself Cheerful Cai Qi.Vanessa called herself Vanessa the Vampire. Everyone laughed when she said it out loud.
It was very fun this term and I hope term 4 will be even more fun.

Term 3 Reflections (by Wei Xin)

Term 3 was an unforgettable term for me as many things took place.

In term 3, our group name was "This Is It" and my group members were Mavis,Wilbert and Manwin. Wilbert was our group leader and I think that he is the motivator of our group. Mavis is always giving great ideas and I admire her intelligence ^^ Manwin is my seatmate. He is always curious about something and he will always ask questions about it until he understands it.
We went to "Padang" and watched NDP show.I really enjoyed the performances.
During the National Day Celebration, we had SEMTREX and I was involved in playing the role of a 'traumatised' student.
We also had a "YOG Day". On that day, the YOG flame passed our school. Two of our P6 students, Farah and Stanley, were the torch bearers.
On Teachers' Day, some of us got to perform for our teachers. I hope that all the teachers really enjoyed our performance as we put in a lot of effort to prepare it.

Time passes really fast. Although there are hard times and fun times, we should still treasure every moment.

Hi Mrs Tay,
Term 3 has been a very fun term for me as we went on many excursions such as the trip to the Padang to watch the NDP preview. We also went to Vivo city to watch the singtel coutdown to YOG as our school has won $10 000 doing the Kallang wave. We had many other interesting celebrations like the opening ceremony, open house and Teacher's Day. I hope term 4 will be as fun as term 3. ^_^

Leadership Camp (by Shawn Goh)

Mrs Tay,

This September Holidays is the most exciting holiday I have had in my life so far. I had a Leadership Camp in school on 7th and 8th of September.

Before that, on Sunday, my father, brother and I went to Beach Road to get a sleeping bag and a flashlight. We got kind of lost on our way there, but we finally managed to get there. At Beach Road, we had a late lunch and proceeded to the second floor where we got the sleeping bag and flashlight.

There were two types of sleeping bags. One was $8, the other was $12. I chose the one that cost $12. I also had a dilemma with the flashlight. The one with 12 LEDs cost $10 while the one with 9 LEDs cost $7. I chose the one that cost $7 with 9 LEDs.

On Tuesday, 9 a.m. I went to school for the `Leadership Camp`. That night we went to the Night Safari. At lights out [11:30p.m], nobody was in the mood to sleep. It was way too hot for anyone to sleep in the tent. It was not until 1 hour after lights out that I slept. Despite being the oldest in the tent, I was the first to fall asleep. My `tent-mates` were Darryl (P4) and Andrew (P3). Andrew, being the youngest, was the last to sleep. I have totally no idea why we slept in that order.

The next day was tiring. I was the first to sleep and first to wake up. As I was going out of the tent to go to the toilet, I accidentally trampled on Andrew's foot and woke him up. I then apologised. The morning exercise was quite strenuous for me. After that, we packed our tent (sisassembling it) and ate our breakfast which consisted of a sandwich, a packet of Milo and a packet of biscuits.

Term 3 Reflections (by Mavis)

Hi Mrs Tay,

This term has been an exciting term for me. My group name was "This Is It". My group members were Sarah, Manwin and Wilbert. I sat with Wilbert. He's a very fun and cheerful boy who sometimes makes me laugh. He's also good in Maths and Science. And he really likes 'Mr Midnight' books.

Why did I say that this term is exciting? There are a few reasons...

1) We went to watch the National Day Parade. We had to design our own shirts. It was my first time there. I was really excited. I enjoyed the fireworks.

2) We celebrated National Day with SEMTREX. I was chosen as one of the care friends. We had to take care of the "traumatised" students or teachers.

3) We went to watch the Opening Ceremony of the YOG Games at VivoCity. We could go there because our school won the School's Biggest Wave Competition for the Junior Category.

4) We performed for the Teachers' Day Celebration. My dance was "Let's Get Crazy". I like Katrina's and Kelly Ann's "Crazier". They played their guitars and sang together.

5) The one I enjoyed the most was Rainbow Day 3 as I was chosen to be one of the emcees. I was with Marcus(3B) and Sheyenne(4B).

As for my grades, I improved in my English and Science while I did worse in my Maths and Chinese. I think I need to put in more effort for my S.A.2.

I really enjoyed Term 3. I wish Term 4 would be as fun as Term 3.

So far, 10 of you have submitted your Term 3 reflections. Thank you... 5 points to each of you!

For the rest of the pupils, do submit your Term 3 reflections by 12 Sep 2010.

Relections (by Manwin)

Hi Mrs Tay,

I really enjoyed term 3. The most fun part about term was the time when we saw the Youth Olympic flame carried by two of the Endeavour primary 6 students. There were also games for us on that day. Out of the three activities, the one that I liked the most was the soccer dribble. After that, we enjoyed a cup of Milo which was very tasty.

We also got to see and enjoy the National Day Parade at the Padang. I enjoyed the part when the F16 and F15 flew past in the air and did some tricks. While we were on our way back to school, I was so tired that I slept throughout the entire journey.

I also enjoyed Teachers' Day and Rainbow day. I can't wait to see what's in term 4. I think I have improved in English.

Reflections (by Johnson)

Hi Mrs Tay,

This term, I have accomplished a few things that I couldn't before.

First of all I managed to pass my Chinese. Why is it an accomplishment? I have failed Chinese for about 11 or 12 exams.

I liked sitting beside Tu Tat because he is quiet and does not disturb me and lends me his book.(I promised him I would buy a new lego book for us to share).

If only I had done better for my science pratical, I could have got A* for science.

Overall, I enjoyed term 3 and would like to thank all the teachers who have helped me to get high A's and pass my chinese.

Term 3 Reflections (by Leona)

To me, this term was a critical one as it covers 15% of the overall marks and it is the second last term of the year. I felt less stressed though . Term 3 was a mixture of both fun and seriousness because we went to some really great events . The great thing about term 3 is i improved in my Science :) Which is the subject I seriously wanted to improve on .

The best part of Term 3 was that I had some really funny group mates like Timothy, Cheryl and Sabrina . I enjoyed sitting with my mate Sabrina . :)

Sabrina is a really friendly girl who makes me laugh every single day. Cheryl is an entertainer with jokes . Timothy is known as the "Joker" in class because he comes up with some weird quotes and makes everyone laugh like mad.

Some great events like the YOG Games Day was held during term 3 and the flame passed by our school. Singapore is a red dot in the map and it's a really good opportunity for us to hold such a great worldwide event. However, not many people were interested in it.

The bad part of term 3 is its coming to an end, which means terms 4 arrives and 45% of the overall marks is covered in the S.A.1; and it's maybe 'farewell' to some of our fellow group mates. But, we will work extremely hard and bond together. :)

We will treasure every moment together!

Reflections for Term 3 (by Gordon)

Mrs Tay,

This term has been an exciting term for me. My group members for this term are Weng Leng, Qun Mei and Han Chu. My partner is Han Chu. He is a cheerful boy but he is a bit naughty! He often teaches me math and I always remind him to do all the school homework. I think that he is quite corncerned about my work, especaily math. What I am worried about are my grades. Although I have improved, I still got a ''C'' for my math in C.A.2.

Term 3 Reflections (by Wilbert)

This term, I have learned a lot of things...

I have improved in my writing and I got a good grade for my English test. Although I lost 1 and a half mark for Science compared with C.A.1, I improved in my maths by 9 marks! I wish I have done better.

I think that Term 3 is the best term yet because we got to watch the National Day Parade
and watch the opening ceremony of the YOG games at Vivocity. We also won the competition of Singtel's Biggest Wave. At first I could no believe my ears when Mr Chia announced that we won as Endeavour Primary School is a new school.

I enjoyed Term 3 the most.I wish I could go back in time to Term 3. But you know what they say, 'Leave the past behind and move on.'

I wonder if Term 4 would be as good as Term 3.

Term 3 Reflections (by Shawn Pang)

Term 3 has been a fun and enjoyable term. I had a lot of fun this term, like the recipe we made in class during English lesson. Sherman and I suggested adding ice kacang and chendol in it. Would you believe that the durian will taste good after that?

My group name this term is Phoenix. My partner was Nigel. I learned a lot sitting with him. He is one of my best friends now. Sometimes, we discussed and worked together to get the answers to the questions in the workbook. We I loved most in Term 3 are the YOG Games Day, Semtrex, Teachers' Day and Rainbow Day. On YOG Game Day, we had fun the whole afternoon. We also saw the YOG flame carried by two of our school's primary 6 pupils, Stanley and Farah. I also had fun when it was National Day. The SEMTREX was organised on that day too. We practised emergency drills on that day.

When the exams were near, I studied hard for all the subjects. I did not expect that I would pass the target Mrs Tay set for me, but I did! I will continue to pay attention in class and get good marks in the S.A.2.

Your student,
Shawn Pang, 5A

My Term 3 Reflections (by Weng Leng)

Hi Mrs Tay,

This is my reflection on term 3:

This term, I achieved quite alot of things...

I like being involved in the Teachers' Day day concert, I solved my friendship problems etc. The biggest achievement is getting a good grade for English. I think I kind of improved by a bit.

But I wish I had done better. This is so far the best P5 term yet!! because we got to go to the National Day Parade and we went to Vivocity.

I think the school must be very proud as we won the competition for the Singtel's biggest wave contest for the junior category.

This is such an exciting term!! I hope my best friends and classmates had enjoyed it too! I hope that the next term would be better than this and I hope that I will get better grades next term for S.A.2 .

Holiday Homework (English)

Most of you worked very hard in Term 3 and you deserve a break. However, do spend your time wisely and make sure you balance work with play. Here are some assignments to occupy your time...

(1) Read at least 3 English books (fiction and non-fiction).
(2) Read at least 1 English news article a day.
(3) Write your reflections on Term 3 in general (or specifically on any event in Term 3) and send them to me via the special email address I gave you. (Please call your friend for the email address if you have lost it.) (Do remember to type in your name. Only Kate remembered to put in her name. I figured out the other 2 reflections were by Vanessa and Dominic from the clues in their reflections.)
(4) Revise alll the 'sentence synthesis' worksheets one more time.
(5) Study for the Spelling Quiz and Dictation test.

Vanessa, Kate and Dominic, thanks for submitting your reflections so quickly.

Enjoy your holidays, everyone!

Reflections on Term 3 (by Dominic)

In term 3, I sat with Zhi Yi. I like to sit with him because we always share new knowledge with each other. I think the most exciting activity in this term was our class creation of a 'Revolting Recipe'. Our group wrote about how to grill a fish. The part that I enjoyed the most was when Zhi Yi wrote 'Add a lot of chili and two lemons'. I do not think I would like the dish because it would taste horrible with spicy and sour sauce. I really enjoyed the time in term 3!

Reflections for Term 3 (by Kate Villaflor)

Term 3 has been a fun term for me. There were a lot of fun activities, holidays, and the YOG. I find the topics for the lessons very interesting. A lot of our lessons and homework were put up in the edp portal and class blog and we get to play some games that the teachers put up.

In term 3, we also had a lot of celebrations, like Rainbow Day 3, YOG Games Day, Teachers' Day and National Day. I had fun on those days. YOG Games Day was a special day for our school as we went to school in the afternoon, play games the whole day and even got to see the YOG flame pass by our school. Two of our schoolmates from primary 6 had a chance to hold the YOG flame. Even though it rained heavily,we still had fun and the passing of the flame was not stopped by the rain.

For National Day,we celebrated it with SEMTREX. The teachers chose some students who helped out during the emergency exercise. I was chosen to be one of the care friends. A care friend has to take care of the 'traumatised' students or teachers. We had to calm them down and make them comfortable. For Teachers' Day, some of us put up performances for the teachers and we made cards for them. Unfortunately, time flies very quickly and term 3 has come to an end. I hope that term 4 will be as fun as term 3.

Reflections on Term 3 (by Vanessa)

Hi, Mrs Tay, I think that term 3 has been a fun and serious term. My group name this term is Toy Story. My group members are Ryan, Kate and Edison. My partner is Ryan. He is a cheerful boy who is seldom upset. During group work, the whole group would work together to earn points. When the exams were near, the whole group became very serious in our work. We tried our best to hand in work on time and when we had to get thing signed by our parents, we would try not to forget to let out parents sign it. We would not want to waste our precious time but cherish it. After the exams, I realised that I could have done better if I had listened more intently in class. I will concentrate more on my studies when school reopens.

happy teachers' day (by Zhi Yi)

A happy Teachers' Day to all teachers!

Thank you for putting in the patience and effort to teach us!
You guide us to the right path and you affect our lives, although we may not notice it.
Thank you once again!

"If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job. ~Donald D. Happy Teachers' Day! (by Shawn Pang)

Happy Teachers Day Mrs Tay, I appreciate the effort when you are teaching us and I promise that I will get a score higher than 70 marks. I also thank you for your guidance, and advice for us to score high marks in examinations. I also wish that you are my form teacher forever but that is not possible. With all your guidance from now on, we all will be very successful people whom people will admire. Thank you Mrs Tay!

HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY!!! (by Vanessa)

Dear teachers,
Thanks for teaching us so much things. Although you teach us what usual teachers would teach, you would teach us patiently. Although you scold us harshly sometimes, we know it is for our own good. All our knowledge comes from you as you play a huge part in our studies. Thanks for your guidance as well. I wish all the teachers...

Most of you have shown improvement in your C.A.2, compared with the C.A.1. (As the C.A.s are based only on Paper 2 for English, it's more meaningful to compare C.A.2 with C.A.1 than with S.A.1.)

Your determination to do well and your diligence have paid off. I'm proud of you.

Hi Kids,

It was heart-warming to see how hard you tried to play the online games to chalk up as many points as possible to raise funds for the needy. I am sure you had fun and learn while doing a good deed for charity.
If you have some time to spare at home, do log in again to earn more points and increase your donation. Don't forget to update your score onto the class list.

Half Portrait

I think you did a really great job for this piece of artwork. Seems like you remember what you've learnt in the previous art lesson on 'Proportion of the Face'. You've also incorporated some maths knowledge - symmetry.

A leader teaches others to be leaders too

Did you enjoy the P1s' performance on Rainbow Day3? Mavis did a great job as one of the 3 emcees on that day. During the rehearsal, she gave the other 2 emcees some tips on speaking clearly. On Rainbow Day itself, I found her backstage rehearsing with them in between performances and teaching them how to calm down the audience. I'm really proud of you, Mavis! I'm also impressed by Marcus (3B) and Sheyenne (4B) who rose to the challenge and proved themselves to be competent emcees.

I'm also very proud of Leona and Aniish (6A) who handled their roles as student emcees for the school's official opening ceremony with such confidence and poise. Shawn Goh also did a wonderful job relaying to the audience the congratulatory messages to our school from our well-wishers overseas.
