Hope you have found the revision and homework over the last 4 days helpful.
I would like to get you to discuss some of the common mistakes that we make.
Can you spot the mistakes in the following solutions? Explain why they are wrong.
Q1. Express 5.5m in cm.
Solution 1: 5.5 m = 505 cm
Solution 2: 5.5 m = 5500 cm
Solution 3: 5.5 m = 5005 cm
Q2. Evaluate 2 + 4 x 50 - 30.
Solution 1:
2 + 4 x 50 - 30
= 6 x 50 - 30
= 300 - 30
= 270
Solution 2:
2 + 4 x 50 - 30
= 6 x 50 - 30
= 6 x 20
= 120
Solution 3:
2 + 4 x 50 - 30
= 2 + 4 x 20
= 2 + 80
= 82
What do we need to remember in order to do Q1 and Q2?

mrs tan,for Q1,we need to remember that 1m=100cm,1km=1000m,1kg=1000g,1 litres=1000ml. And for Q2,we need to remember that ()comes first,x or divide comes second and + or -is next. :)
Q1: 1m=100cm so 5.5m=505cm
1kg=1000g 1km=1000m 1L=1000 ml
Q2: The order is (x or divide) or whichever comes first, then (+ or -)or whichever comes first and finally
x or divide then + or -.
Oh Yea answer is none of the soultions it is actually
(1) 4x50=200 (2)200+2=202 (3)202-30=172
So the answer is 172
Sorry the answer to Q1 is auctally none of them the real answer is 550cm

Dear Mrs Tan,
For Q1, we have to bear in mind that:
1m=100cm
1km=1000m
1kg=1000g
and lastly,1 litres=1000ml.
Gor Q2,we have to remember that we have to calculate whatever is inside the bracket first. We have to do the multiplication or division that is inside the bracket first. Then, we carry on by multiplying and/or dividing the numbers outside. do bear in mind that the pattern is:
( x/divide )
x/divide
+/-
Then viola! the answer.
