What do you know about Triangles?

We have just learnt about triangles.

Are the following statements true or false? Explain why.
1. Any side of a triangle can be the base.
2. The height of a triangle is always inside the triangle.

Give two other things that you know about a triangle.

mrs tan the second one that is te hieght must be inside the triangle is wrong as the height can be outside too!

To get Area we need to Height x Base

When the base and height meet, they form a right angle.

Hi Shawn, thanks for your comment. Yes, the height can be outside too. Any other observation?
How about the other pupils in the class? Your comments please.

The base can be any side as long as the length is perpendicular to it and it touches another vertex.

The height is always perpendicular to the base. The height of the triangle always reached the top.

In a trangle, there is always a height and a base.

Well, i think the first statement is quite true, well the second one is not. Mostly we would see the height inside the triangles, but the height can be outside of the triangle at the same time. I learnt that in a triangle, there are 3 vertex. The height in a triangle must touch a vertex and have a right angle in order to be considered a height. I also learnt that the base can be any side of the triangle. ^_^

the first one is true .the height is depending on the base

mrs tan the first sentence is correct because the triangle have three vertex. The second sentence is wrong ,because the height can be at the corner too.

the first sentence is correct because a triangle have three same part. The second sentence is wrong because the height can also be at the side of the triangle. The two things that I know is the height is always perpenticular to the base and the triangle have three vertex.

Mrs Tan, for the sentence it is true but for the second, it is definitely false. Because the height might not always be inside the triangle, it may be ouside. The other 2 things that i know is that a triangle has 3 vertex and to get the area of the triangle, you must take the height multiply by the base.

the two shorter sides squared and added together will make the length of the longest side squared.this will only not work when the two shorter sides are both 1.
The angles of all the vertices added together always make 180 degrees.

Hi, think you have understood how height should be drawn with respect to the base. Here are some things to remember:
1. Height must be perpendicular to the base and touches the vertex opposite the base.
2. Area of triangle = half x base x height

Zhi Yi has investigated further and found out more about the angles and the sides of a triangle. What he mentioned about the sum of angles in the triangle being 180 degrees will be learnt next semester. The other one about squares of the sides, you will learn it in secondary school.
Zhi Yi thanks for sharing.
