Learning Journey to Little India

Dzaki...
We first visited Sri Veerakaliamman Temple. I learnt that the god's name is Ganesha. There was a place for the Hindus to break coconuts. It is said that if you break the coconut, you will break your ego. Ego is like your pride. On the trip back to school, the tour guide asked us some questions and gave us prizes if we could answer the questions correctly.

Brian...
I learnt that the Indians buy flower garlands to offer to gods in the temple, decorate statutes of deities at home or give to the bride and groom during a wedding ceremony.

Edison...
The purpose of the trip is to understand and appreciate the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Indian people and to foster a sense of pride in our heritage. This will help us share a common bond. Our final stop was at Little India Arcade where handicrafts are sold. I bought a wooden snake-in-a-box for one dollar.

Cai Qi...
We stopped at Tekka Market for food. Wilbert bought a big coconut and finished it within a few minutes.

Mavis...
The tour guide told us that Veerasamy Street was named after the first Indian doctor in Little India. At the junction of Hastings Road and Serangoon Road, there was a pillar bearing a sculptured head and a plaque. It is supposed to represent a cow or buffalo, with reference to the main activity of the area in the past - cattle trade.

Kai Boon...
The tour guide explained to us how the Indians eat in the olden days. He said that when they thought the food was delicious, they would fold the banana leaf which held the food towards them. If they thought the food was awful, they would fold the banana leaf away from them.
